What is Restorative Yoga?

Restorative yoga is a gentle, calming practice that focuses on deep relaxation and rest. It encourages the body and mind to slow down, release tension, and find a natural sense of balance.

Unlike more active forms of yoga, restorative poses are held for longer periods of time and supported by props such as blankets, bolsters, and blocks. This allows the body to let go. There is no strain or effort, so that true rest can happen.

In restorative yoga, we often talk about relaxation and deep rest.

  • Relaxation is when the body begins to slow down, the heart rate lowers, the breath deepens, and muscles soften.

  • Deep rest happens once the body feels safe and supported. It can then let go of stress and start to rest and rebalance

What to Expect:

Each session will gently guide you towards this deep state of relaxation:

  • We’ll begin with some simple centering and breath awareness, helping you settle in.

  • Then we’ll move through some gentle stretching and mindful movement to release any physical tension.

  • Finally, we’ll end with a guided relaxation using Yoga Nidra techniques. This is a practice sometimes called “yogic sleep”, which allows you to explore the peaceful space between wakefulness and sleep.

The environment will be calm, quiet and supportive.

Benefits of Restorative Yoga:

Restorative yoga invites us to slow down and take a pause amidst our busy  daily lives. Benefits can include:

  • Reduced stress: Activates the body’s rest-and-digest response, helping to lower heart rate and calm the nervous system.

  • Improved sleep: Deep relaxation can help you unwind and prepare for a restful night’s sleep.

  • Enhanced flexibility: Gentle poses help release tension and encourage soft, natural movement.

  • Better wellbeing: Regular practice may help lift mood, ease anxiety, and promote emotional balance.

  • Supported recovery: Helpful for anyone recovering from illness, injury, or burnout.

  • Improved breathing: Slow, mindful breathing supports healthy respiratory function and relaxation.

  • Mindful awareness: Encourages a deeper connection to the body, breath, and present moment.
